What is Identity Theft?

  • Fraudsters who successfully steal personal information (credit card number, drivers' license number, ID numbers, date of birth etc.) can cause significant financial loss within a short span of time.
  • Armed with the personal information, identity thieves can use the victim's bank accounts to apply for loans, transfer large sums of money, and shop online.
  • Identity theft can last for months if the victim is not active in checking his statements regularly and also if the fraudster is carrying out transactions is small sums which can easily go unnoticed.

How do I protect myself from Identity Theft?

  • When in need of disposing of documents, ensure that all documents containing personal information are shredded and not discarded intact.
  • No financial institution, Police or even QIB is authorized to ask you for your PIN or your internet banking password. This information belongs only to you and so you need to keep it confidential.
  • Ensure you are not being watched while entering PINS at ATM terminals or billing terminals at merchant.

What is Vishing?

The attempt to take confidential information over the phone from someone is known as vishing. Fraudsters claiming to be representing the bank will try to get the confidential details from the unsuspecting user. The confidential details could be account number, card number, cvv id, date of birth and other personal parameters. The fraudster will then use these details to perform fraudulent activities on behalf of the user.

How does Vishing occur?

  • Fraudsters claiming to be representatives of the bank call unsuspecting users and ask for confidential information. Confidential details could be account number, card number, cvv id and other personal parameters.
  • On receiving the details, the fraudster begins to carry out fraudulent activities on behalf of the user thereby causing financial loss to the victim.

How does QIB handle Vishing?

  • QIB will never call the customers asking for their personal information. In case the bank desires any clarification, then the user is requested to visit the nearest branch.

Tips to avoid Vishing

  • Always be suspicious of phone calls from individuals who call asking you to confirm your banking details.
  • If you receive a voice message from someone asking you to provide your banking details, then DO NOT call back the number and leave the details. Call the customer care @ 4444 8444 and inform about the same.

Will I receive phone calls from QIB

  • You might receive a phone call from the telemarketing agent to ensure that you are getting the most out of the services provided by QIB.
  • At any given time, you will never receive a call or email from QIB asking you for your confidential banking information such as usernames, PINs & passwords.

Tips around PIN safety

  • Memorize your PIN or change your PIN as soon as you receive the PIN mailer.
  • Shred the PIN mailer after changing your PIN.
  • ever mention your PIN to ANYONE.
  • Never write your PIN on paper and keep it anywhere near your ATM card/ Debit card/ Credit card.

Tips around Password safety

  • Your internet banking password should be complex and difficult for others to guess. Use a combination of letters, numbers and special characters (like $, !, @, #, % etc)
  • Do not use passwords that can be easily guessed. Avoid using the names in the passwords as it can be guessed easily by someone who knows you well.
  • Do not use the same password as you use to login to your computer to check your email.
  • Disable the auto complete feature in your browser to avoid your username and password fields to be pre-populated.
  • In case of accessing the internet banking site from a shared computer, immediately change your password after completing your task.
  • Never share your passwords with anyone, including family members, not even to someone from QIB.
  • A password containing all numbers or all letters is a password with less security (example, 126793 or security).
  • A password containing a combination of letters and numbers is a password with medium level of security (example, security123 or Sec123rity)
  • A password containing a combination of upper case letter, lower case letter, numbers and special characters (such as @,#, $ etc.) represents a strong password (example, $ecur1Ty).
