Foreign Exchange

Shari’a Compliant Foreign Exchange (FX) solutions for risk management of currency positions are a key element of QIBs financial markets capabilities, with QIB able to offer access to a range of emerging market, GCC and G10 currencies. QIBs FX solutions can help businesses to mitigate and manage FX exposures which could have a measurable impact on overall business performance with solutions ranging from simple to more sophisticated tailored strategies.

Spot FX Transaction: Spot FX refers to an agreement to purchase or sell one currency for another at an agreed exchange rate. QIB has the capability to provide competitive and timely quotes in various Emerging, GCC, and G10 currencies, allowing clients to convert one currency to another at the prevalent exchange rate for immediate settlement.

Forward FX Transaction: QIB is able to offer clients the ability to enter into Shari’a compliant forward FX transactions in various currencies. This hedging tool allows clients that have a future commitment in a foreign currency to mitigate the risk of rate fluctuation between now and when the commitment is due. This is achieved by allowing the client to fix the price of an FX transaction at trade inception, for which the exchange will take place at a future date that matches the client’s future commitment in the foreign currency. Currency fluctuations between the time the Forward FX Transaction is traded and the future commitment is due are therefore no longer relevant.

Structured FX Hedging Solutions: For clients that have more complex FX Hedging requirements, QIB is able to devise and tailor more structured hedging solutions, that could include FX hedging for pre/post foreign acquisitions, and more structured Wa’ad and Murabaha based hedging solutions.

Hedging Solutions

Profit Rate Swap: Profit Rate Swaps allow clients to effectively manage market rate exposure for both assets and liabilities in a Shari’a compliant manner. The structure allows the client to exchange a fixed profit rate for a floating profit rate and vice versa. QIB is able to effectively analyze client portfolios to provide optimal rate hedging solutions with the aim to minimize client exposure to rate shift scenarios.

Other Hedging Tools: QIB is able to offer more advanced profit rate, structured FX, and commodity hedging solutions. QIB can also look at client positions from an enterprise-wide perspective (taking into account all market exposures on a consolidated basis to provide a global portfolio hedging solution e.g. taking into account total profit rate, FX, and commodity exposures).

Investment Products

QIB is in the process of developing its platform to offer bespoke Shari’a compliant investment solutions that suit client investment requirements (growth, income generation, capital preservation etc..). The profile of each investment can be tailored to the specific risk/return requirements of individual clients, with variable time horizon, exposure to a wide selection of Shari’a compliant assets, and up to 100% capital preservation.
